About

I live and work as a freelance costume and stage designer in Vienna. After completing my education of men’s tailoring at the National Theater Mannheim, I graduated the master class of stage and film design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in the year 1997 with distinction. I work in the fields of spoken theater, opera and contemporary music theater as well as ballet and dance. These engagements lead me to numerous European theaters.

The costumes for ballet interludes of the Viennese Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s Concert have, among other things, originated already five times from me. At the Vereinigten Bühnen Krefeld-Mönchengladbach, I received the Theater-Oscar for my design of the “Zauberflöte”. Designs and costumes of mine have been presented in exhibitions and the costume drafts along with scene models and original costumes are displayed in theater collections and museums.

The abstract stage designs composed by me are realized as thinking spaces and offer a great variety of creative and visionary options for directors and choreographers. For me, the stage rooms are always „narrative spaces“ – they enable, support and inspire the play. My stage spaces are areas, which speak and are experienced through abstract emptiness as well as baroque opulence.

I perceive my work of a costume designer as similar to that of a sculptor; the fundamental idea is the creation of a three-dimensional form of a figure, as a manifestation of its character. My costume ideas arise predominantly from the isolation of a historical silhouette. The costumes are not only garments on the stage – they are a part of the whole, a part of the act. They are well thought through covers that are being played with on the stage. The characters together with dramatic power of singers, actors or dancers reveal, carry a movement and simultaneously contain surprises.

Along with the operations in theater, I design and curate exhibitions and works as a scenographer. I am responsible as artistic director, for instance, for the Lower Austrian national exhibition 2013 and for the overall artistic design of the Museum of prehistory, ancient history and mediaeval archaeology MAMUZ Schloss Asparn a.d. Zaya, Austria, 2014.

Sacred art is a further facet of my work. It involves the development of new liturgical instruments and vestments, temporal and artistic spatial interventions or space installations, as well as artistic and architectural composition of the space concepts of the sacred rooms. My sacred designs have been presented in a variety of group and single exhibitions and remain in many notable churches, cathedral churches as well as monasteries.
