The abstract stage designs created by Christof Cremer are spaces for reflection and offer directors an enormous variety of interpretive possibilities. His stage concepts are always “narrative spaces”—they enable, support, and inspire the performance. These are spaces that speak to the audience and come to life through both abstract emptiness and baroque opulence.

“I see my work as a costume designer as similar to that of a sculptor; the main idea is to create a three-dimensional form for the character as an expression of their personality. My costume ideas usually stem from isolating a historical silhouette. The costumes are not merely clothing on stage—they are part of the whole, part of the action. Conceived as shells with which to perform and which—like the stage spaces—are brought to life; together with the performative power of singers, actors, or dancers, they reveal characters, possess a sense of movement, and at the same time hold surprises. The goal of my work is to make tangible that magical moment when music, performance, space, and costume come together as a whole in the minds of the audience. For me, the audience is part of the performance and the theatrical setting. Much like in religion, what interests me about theater is the point where knowledge transitions into intuition, sensation, foreboding, and faith. Perfect theatrical moments are those in which feeling replaces thinking, and yet one understands everything.”
