Concealment of altar - Lent installation
Lent installation 2005
The project designed for the Ruprecht Church deals with the tradition of the concealment, which dates back to the 10th century. In the context of the Lent installation 2005, the altar is “disguised” with an artistic cover. The cover depicts the altar in a color gradient from violet to white.
The portrayal matches an X-ray image, it uncovers, takes on light, thus is in a certain way transparent. Through this design, the structure of the altar – the block of bricks – is brought closer to the observer in its form and multilayered nature; the observer is lead to a new way of looking. The altar is concealed and nevertheless – or exactly therefore – remarkably present.
As a result of the concealment of the altar, a new sense of space is revealed to the visitor and the participants of the liturgical celebration; it allows a new, deep experience of the forthcoming.

The altar will be unveiled during the celebration of the Easter night – it will be explored again.
Das Projekt ist eine Gemeinschaftsarbeit von Julia Oppermann und Christof Cremer.
