To mark the 50th anniversary of the Austrian State Treaty, the Danube Waltz will be performed at the Lower Belvedere. Given this anniversary, it seems natural to design the costumes in the style of the era when the State Treaty was signed.
For me, as a costume designer, the silhouettes of 1950s fashion are the most beautiful and romantic of the 20th century. 1950s fashion drew inspiration from the fashion of the second half of the 19th century; this connects us to Johann Strauss.For the choreography of the Danube Waltz, a unique design was created for each individual lady; together, all the dresses form the color palette of the Danube’s waters—from light blue to blue-green. The sun’s reflections on the water, as well as the shimmer and gleam of the water itself, are captured in the sparkle and reflection of the sequin embroidery.
The entire costume ensemble reflects what is arguably the most celebrated and historically significant river, the “Danube, so blue….”
The embroidery was created in collaboration with the Vorarlberg Embroidery Association.
The gentlemen wear tuxedos featuring various designs.
